1. Eight weeks before the move

Go through all your stuff and get rid of anything you don’t want to take to your new home.

Research a diverse range of moving companies and request quotes from them.

Save important documents in a binder to keep everything organized and easily accessible.

Ask your children’s schools to transfer their records to their new school district.
2. Six weeks before the move

Stock up on boxes, tape, Bubble Wrap, Labels, and whatever else you think you’ll need.

Go through your stuff again and get rid of any items you decide you don’t want.

Measure the rooms in your new house and your furniture to make sure everything will fit.
3. Four weeks before the move

Choose a moving company and ask for written confirmation of key details like moving date and price.

Pack up items you don’t use that much, and take note of more expensive items that you want to insure.

Apply labels to your boxes that indicate the contents and room where it belongs.

Fill out a change-of-address form on the USPS website or on paper at the post office.

Notify your bank, employer, and credit card, insurance, and utility companies of your new address.

Have your health care provider transfer your medical records to your new care provider.
4. Two weeks before the move

Request enough time off from work to carry out your move.

If you’re switching banks, clean out the safe deposit box from your old bank.

Confirm details with your moving company and make any necessary adjustments.
5. One week before the move

Check the details with the moving company one more time, just in case.

Figure out your payment method (cash, check,credit card) and have it ready for moving day.
6. Day of the move

Confirm that the moving truck is from the company you hired and that you aren’t being scammed.

Make sure everything on the bill of lading and inventory list has been delivered before you sign the paperwork.
